Visions of Home
When I first began imagining this CD project, my main goal was to capture an honest picture of a personal worship experience. For me, this experience has often clashed with how we corporately worship on a Sunday morning. The struggles, the searching, the intimate truths, the complete vulnerability and the euphoria of being wrapped in perfect grace and love are not things that I could attribute to singing in a crowd. This could be just me. As a worship leader, I began working through how I might connect the personal with the corporate, and although it is an abiding sojourn I am now seeing glimpses of the transcendent and the sublime. One thing I know for sure is that I cannot stand before anyone and lead them into the presence of God without first being there myself.
I began listening to songs that other worship leaders were singing at art shows and coffee houses and sometimes on a Sunday morning, and I noticed that many songs reminded me of my own private encounters with God. It gave me goose bumps. Many of these songs were not written with a congregation in mind, but tell of an honest journey through faith, a conversation with God that has no ending. These songs are of no certain genre or style, but all speak from a place of knowing God and being known by God.
Once the songs had been selected, I was charmed by the themes of grace and home. Anyone who has known me for any length of time could tell that Amazing Grace is my theme song and to me the very best line of that song is "and grace will lead me home". I believe that home is the place where you are known and loved unconditionally and I cannot be known and loved without grace because I am wildly removed from being perfect and whole.
For many of us here on the west coast, we are far from the places where we
grew up and our families and friends are scattered around the globe. If we can
find our home in God, then we can be at home anywhere.
My hope is that the
songs on this CD will resonate with people where they are at and point them in
the direction of where they should go.
